Force Component Sums
Extracting the x- and y-components of forces from a force diagram is an essential skill for solving Newton's 2nd Law problems. Run the applet to practice this skill. Each time you click on "Go" you will receive a new force diagram, together with an x-y coordinate system. The symbols A and B represent angles; the other symbols (W, N, f, etc.) are the magnitudes of the forces. Figure out the force components and type in the sums of these components in the spaces provided. Click on "Check" to verify your answers. Capitalization is significant, so make sure your symbols match those shown. Also, the program requires that you type each force symbol before the cos or sin (if appropriate) You may put the forces in any order and insert spaces as you like.
